ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions Sweden is the first organization to support Swedish women’s brain health by participating in the launch of the #BeBrainPowerful Sweden campaign at Dementia Forum X on the 15th of May 2019. ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, part of the world’s largest lock manufacturers ASSA ABLOY Group, will join panelists at the Royal Palace of Stockholm to advocate for women’s brain health awareness and action. Emphasis will be placed on the gender aspect of dementia care and research, as well as risk-reduction efforts to maintain brain health throughout life.
Dementia Forum X is a meeting that gathers international stakeholders to focus on the challenges of dementia and rapid demographic change. The concept – founded by Swedish Care International and organized by Forum For Elderly Care in collaboration with Stiftelsen Silviahemmet, Karolinska Institutet, Forte and Svenskt Demenscentrum – is organized biennially under the patronage of HM Queen Silvia of Sweden. The first Dementia Forum X was held in 2015 in Stockholm, and the concept has been internationalized with Dementia Forum X Japan taking place in 2018, as well as Dementia Forum X South Korea planned for 2020.
The #BeBrainPowerful campaign was launched in the United States by UsAgainstAlzheimer’s and WomenAgainstAlzheimer’s in November 2018 to highlight women’s brain health. Women are disproportionately affected by dementia, both in terms of the number of people living with the disease and their caregivers. Women provide a significant amount of informal caregiving and around two-thirds of primary caregivers are women. At present most research in dementia does not account for difference based on gender, and variance in prevalence rates is often attributed to women’s longer lifespan. This assumption is over-simplistic and new studies demonstrate that socioeconomic, physiological and psychological factors also have a role in brain health. #BeBrainPowerful calls for a change in the way society looks at dementia diseases and its impact on women.
Says Anna Månströmer, Head of Marketing and Communication at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions Sweden, “A corporate perspective in the overall brain health discussion is not only ideal, it is necessary. Being part of the #BeBrainPowerful movement is a natural alignment for ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions. For us, we need to be able to care, protect and secure our most precious resource – our employees. We want to be part of a leadership movement that normalizes brain health discussions widely.”
