Stiftelsen Silviahemmet was founded in 1996 by HM Queen Silvia of Sweden who herself had a personal experience of taking care of her mother living with dementia.
Stiftelsen Silviahemmet - a Swedish centre of excellence in dementia care
Stiftelsen Silviahemmet has been continuously developing the Silviahemmet dementia care philosophy for over the past 20 years. It currently operates as a Swedish centre of excellence in dementia care and training, as well as a dementia daycare center that can be visited as a part of educational study visits organised by SCI.
It is based on the palliative approach to care, which promotes life and relieves suffering from the early symptoms of dementia to the end of life.
Improve quality of life
The philosophy forms the foundation of the education aiming at the highest quality of life regardless of the phase or type of dementia disease.
Based on four cornerstones
The person-centred care philosophy is based on the four cornerstones as follows:
- A. Person-centered care/symptom control
- B. Teamwork
- C. Family support
- D. Communication and relation
A comprehensive basis for a variety of programmes
Silviahemmet care philosophy forms a solid base for a broad variety of education and training programmes, including certification programmes for nursing homes, e-learning courses and seminars for caregivers and organisations providing care, postgraduate studies for registered nurses at Sophiahemmet University and master courses for physicians, occupational therapists and physiotherapists at Karolinska Institutet, one of the top medical universities in the world.
