What is Geras Solutions?

Geras Solutions provides a digital tool and decision support for dementia investigation in case of suspected cognitive disease. The tool is developed in collaboration with both health centres and specialist clinics and has been tested clinically by Karolinska University Hospital.

With the help of a tablet, patients and relatives can administer parts of the investigation themselves. The results are interpreted automatically and presented in a separate interface for healthcare.

The digital tool includes cognitive screening tests that can be performed by the patient at the clinic or at home. The test is a further development of traditional paper-and-pen tests (MoCA, MMSE and clock-test). Through a number of tasks tested; memory, visuospatial ability, executive functions, attention/working memory, language and orientation. The tool collects a large amount of data on how the test is conducted and provides cut-off scores to distinguish subjective cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment and suspected cognitive disease/dementia. The test has in clinical study demonstrated higher sensitivity and specificity than other established methods. The time required for tests is also recorded and contributes with additional decision-making documents with limits based on the same clinical study.

With the tool you can make a complete medical history. Which is carried out, either by the patient himself with the support of a relative, or with a health care professional. Cross-cutting areas are determined by health professionals and intelligent question batteries ask supplementary questions. Medical history covers: general orientation information about the patient, perceived cognitive symptoms based on the respective domain, general health status, heredity, medication, mental health, stress, attention span, addiction, risk factors and lifestyle/habits.

Relatives can easily contribute with their views on symptom development via digital version of neurocognitive symptom questionnaire (CIMP-QUEST). By answering the questions in this well-established framework, a summary is automatically generated as an additional basis for decision-making. By easily involving relatives, consistency is also ensured in the image given by the patient. The healthcare interface also provides a reference library with profiles for various cognitive disorders, which can be easily compared to the patient’s profile.

Healthcare professionals can, among different elements, choose which ones to perform by the patient and relatives. Once these have been completed, the basis for the decision is compiled directly in the clinical assessment tool. This provides a simple overview with the opportunity to dive deeper into the details. Follow-up on return visits is easily compared with previous results to create a good picture of progress.

The FINGER study has revolutionized the approach to brain health. It shows the possibilities of reducing the risk of cognitive impairment by changing lifestyle factors in different risk groups. Via the app “Minnesmottagningen” the patient and relatives have access to a risk reduction tool based on parts of the FINGER study. Here you will find information and support to follow habits related to diet, exercise, social interaction and activities to train the brain.
